This kitchen project by 223estudio, located in Mar del Plata, Argentina, stands out for its linear layout and cheerful yet classic aesthetic. The backsplash tiles add a vibrant touch and blend seamlessly with the other elements to create a functional and inviting space.
According to the interior designer, the Tabarca Turquesa tile “brought color and life, perfectly contrasting with the tones chosen for the furniture and flooring,” always adhering to the clients' request for a classic aesthetic with a more contemporary and cheerful touch. The idea was to make the kitchen—the heart of the home—more functional, both for cooking and spending more time there.
To achieve this, a smart space planning was implemented, with a linear layout that optimizes the available space. All essential elements are placed along a single wall: stove, sink, dishwasher, washing machine, built-in microwave, and a vertical wall-mounted boiler. Opposite this, there's a wooden table with high chairs, perfect for informal meals or as an additional workspace.
The true star of this kitchen is undoubtedly our Tabarca Turquesa ceramic tile, which covers the backsplash. With its 7,5x23 cm format and staggered horizontal placement, it adds visual dynamism to the wall without overwhelming it. Its intense and saturated turquoise hue evokes the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean, giving the space a unique personality that balances nostalgia and modernity. The color variation between tiles, a typical feature of handcrafted ceramics, creates a beautiful watercolor effect. Moreover, the Tabarca Turquesa acts as a visual connector between cooler elements (like stainless steel appliances and cement-gray furniture) and warmer ones, such as the natural wood countertop of the dining table and the wicker details of the pendant lamps.
Despite its small size, this kitchen conveys a sense of spaciousness, order, and character. The mix of textures—from the cement furniture to the glazed tiles—adds visual richness without being excessive. The turquoise green of the backsplash serves as the design's guiding thread, providing a vibrant splash of color that not only decorates but also inspires.
In short, this kitchen is a perfect example of how a single, well-chosen, and intelligently applied element can transform an entire space. The tile not only adds color but also identity, making this kitchen a cozy, elegant environment with a Mediterranean spirit—a contemporary space where design harmonizes with the warmth of home.
