Make the most of curved areas! Which tiles to use and how to install them

In this article we talk about:

Tiles are a popular choice for decorating and cladding surfaces in our homes. However, the question often arises as to whether it is possible to use tiles on curved surfaces. The answer is yes. But not all tiles are suitable and the correct use must be understood in order to achieve the best result. Although curved surfaces can be a challenge in interior design, with the right choice of tiles and installation techniques, any space can be transformed into a work of art.

In this post, we will explore the adaptability of tiles to these areas, the types suitable for different curves and the benefits of using them. Plus, we'll provide you with a detailed guide on how to install them for the best results. Let's get started!

Can tiles be used on curved surfaces?

The short answer is yes, tiles can be used on curved surfaces. In fact, not only is it possible, but it can also add a touch of elegance and originality to any space, transforming curved surfaces into architectural highlights. In this sense, the durability, ease of cleaning and strength of the tiles make this option both aesthetically pleasing and functional.

However, the process requires careful planning, selection of suitable materials and specific installation techniques to ensure a perfect, long-lasting finish. Below, we explore how to achieve this and the benefits it can offer.

Adaptability of the tiles to all types of surfaces

    Flexibility and size

The success of tile installation on curved surfaces lies in the adaptability of the tiles selected. Smaller tiles, such as mosaics, are ideal for sharp curves because of their small size, which allows them to follow contours without creating stresses and cracks. On the other hand, rectangular or pre-cut tiles can be used for smooth curves if trimmed properly.

    Suitable materials

Not all tiles are equally suitable for curved surfaces. Ceramic and porcelain tiles are popular choices due to their flexibility and durability. In addition, as mentioned above, there are some tiles that are already specially designed to accommodate curves, as they are manufactured thinner or are designed with pre-cuts in shapes that make them easier to cut and install. For example, our Kit-Kat or Mintons series would fall into this typology of tiles.

    Study of surfaces and materials

Before starting the installation, it is essential to study the curved surface and the material it is made of. Curved surfaces can be concave (such as niches or interior arches) or convex (such as columns or rounded edges), and each will require a slightly different approach. In addition, the type of surface material must be considered, as this may influence the choice of adhesive and the type of tile that can be laid there.

On the other hand, the surface must be well prepared, clean, dry and level. In some cases, it may be necessary to apply a base coat or a reinforcing mesh to ensure that the tiles adhere correctly and follow the shape of the curve without problems.

What are the benefits of using tiles in curved areas?

    - Aesthetics. Tiles on curved surfaces can transform an ordinary space into an extraordinary one, adding a unique and sophisticated visual element. They can highlight architectural features and create attractive focal points in any room. In fact, sometimes it's even better to go for creative ideas for cladding columns and curved areas to elevate the design.

    - Cleaning and maintenance. Tiles are easy to clean and maintain, which is especially useful in areas such as bathrooms and kitchens. On curved surfaces, tiles offer the same ease of cleaning as on flat surfaces, helping to keep the space hygienic and fresh.

    - Durability and strength. Tiles are known for their durability and resistance to moisture, stains and wear. When installed correctly on curved surfaces, they offer a durable tiling solution that can stand the test of time without losing its beauty or functionality.

How to install tiles on curved surfaces?

The following is the process to follow when laying tiles on curved surfaces:

    - Trimming. Accurate tile trimming is essential for a successful installation on curved surfaces. Use appropriate tools such as tile cutters or diamond saws to make clean, precise cuts that perfectly fit the curve of the surface.

    - Laying. Once the tile has been cut, the next step is to lay it in the corresponding area, using the crosspieces to ensure that the tile is perfectly positioned before grouting.

    - Joints. Once the tile has been correctly laid, it is time to grout: applying the grout evenly will ensure a clean, professional finish. On curved surfaces, you may need to adjust the size of the joints to allow for greater flexibility and prevent tiles from shifting or breaking.

    - Cleaning. The final step is to clean any excess mortar from the joints before it dries and ensure that all tiles are well bonded. After the mortar has dried completely, seal the joints to prevent moisture and dirt build-up.

Kit-Kat: an endless mosaic tile that is characterised by its adaptability to curved areas

Inspired by Japanese ceramics, our Kit-Kat series is in line with the latest trends. It is a firm commitment to soft curves, as one of its main features is that it is very easy to use in curved areas. Below, we leave you some examples of how it looks covering curves and at the end of the post you can see the video of how we lay it in our showroom, both in concave and convex curves.

Mosaics: a classic ally for cladding curved areas

Their small size and flexibility make mosaics particularly suitable for cladding curved areas where other types of tiles may not be as effective. Mosaics can be made of ceramic, glass, natural stone or porcelain, and are usually mounted on a mesh that facilitates their installation, ensuring that the mosaics stay in place while the adhesive dries. This structure allows them to easily adapt to curves without the need for complex cutting or extensive adjustments.

Small tile: a growing trend in interior design to elevate designs

In the world of interior design, attention to detail and the ability to transform spaces with carefully selected elements are key and small tiles are gaining popularity for their versatility and ability to create unique and sophisticated designs.

One of the great advantages of small tiles is their ability to adapt to curved surfaces and difficult angles. Small tiles can be manipulated more easily, allowing for a more uniform and aesthetically pleasing installation in challenging spaces such as columns, arches and niches.
