The beauty of imperfection, transformed into ceramic material.
Zipango takes its name from the ancient term by which the West once imagined Japan: a distant land associated with beauty, refinement and an extraordinary craft tradition. From this encounter between the Western vision of Japan and contemporary design comes a collection of porcelain tiles in a 7×28 cm format that celebrates materiality, imperfection and the uniqueness of each piece.
Its aesthetic is inspired by Japanese handcrafted ceramics, where subtle irregularities are not concealed but embraced as part of the object’s beauty. Slightly imperfect surfaces and richly nuanced glazes create a natural, ever-changing appearance. Colour varies in intensity, accumulates differently across the surface and generates subtle contrasts that add depth. As a result, no two pieces look exactly alike and, when combined, these variations create dynamic, balanced surfaces with a distinctive visual richness.
Zipango’s palette comprises seven shades inspired by mineral, botanical and earthy tones. From the lightest neutrals to deeper greens, blues and browns, the range makes it possible to create serene interiors or introduce chromatic accents while maintaining a natural aesthetic. Across the glaze, each colour develops different intensities and nuances, reinforcing the handcrafted character of the collection.
This richness is achieved through a surface enhanced with granules, which add depth to the glaze and intensify its variations. Texture, gloss and subtle irregularities interact with light, changing the perception of the surface depending on the viewing angle and revealing new details as you move through the space.
The elongated 7×28 cm format further expands the collection’s compositional possibilities, allowing different laying directions and patterns to be explored. A simple, versatile geometry that allows colour, glaze variations and the richness of the material to become the true protagonists.
Zipango brings the sensitivity of Japanese ceramics into contemporary interior design. A collection in which value lies not in achieving completely uniform surfaces, but in finding balance within their differences. Because it is precisely the nuances, irregularities and traces of the material that make each composition unique.
